Firms 'lack virtual machine deployment skills'

Many businesses are not fully deploying virtual desktop computers or servers because of inadequate engineering abilities, a study has shown.

Research commissioned by IT consultancy firm Avanade highlights that 53 per cent of UK companies do not have the expertise to successfully implement server and desktop virtualisation, reports IT Week.

The firm's director, Brent Kronenberg, said that many businesses were not considering the level of difficulty involved in implementing virtual machines.

"It is a 'can learn' technology but there is a lack of formalisation around it and companies still have to do some planning - technicians do not necessarily have the skills at the architectural level," he said.

In addition, the study found that the majority of IT managers questioned were not interested in desktop virtualisation, with only 28 per cent showing signs of curiosity.

Despite the dissenting attitudes, Gartner recently predicted that virtualisation would be the most important technology in IT operations between now and 2010.
