Access Accounting has launched a new scheme to encourage staff at the Colchester-based business and accounting software house to help with local community projects.

Eight members of staff recently took part in the scheme's first initiative to help the Essex Wildlife Trust clear woodland at Gathering Grounds, a local reserve near Lexden, Colchester.

Kevin Misselbrook, customer services director for Access Accounting, commented, "Throughout 2007 we will have a programme of events to help local organisations by providing practical assistance for various projects. The first of these events was to help the Essex Wildlife Trust with the management of their nature reserves. Not only is Access Accounting able to put something back into the community, it will allow our staff to learn and develop other skills."

The team worked under the guidance of Trust warden Matt Cole, to help clear the coppice woodlands which involved clearing scrub, bushes, and branches and creating a large bonfire.

Matt commented, "Everyone worked extremely hard throughout the day. The Essex Wildlife Trust looks after more than 7,250 acres of land on 87 nature reserves and a nature park. We rely on people volunteering their time and skills to support our conservation activity; it is support such as this that helps us achieve the success that we do."

Access Accounting is certainly no stranger to community projects. It has been actively fundraising for charities since 2000, having raised £26,600 to date, and has recently announced that Stepping Stones, based at the Wilson Marriage Community Centre in Colchester, will be its 'Charity of the Year' for 2007. The software developer has also supported Stratford St Mary Primary School by sponsoring its Christmas card competition, enabling it to reap 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of the cards for school funds.
